Please understand you will need a lead-in hose to run from the water source to this hose stand’s spigot.

You’ll also need to consider storage capacity to make sure the hose holder can accommodate the length of hose needed for your yard. In this article let’s take a closer look at the best free standing hose holders, and also discuss some things to consider when buying these type of stands.

Best Free Standing Garden Hose Holders

TomCare Free Standing Garden Hose Holder

This TomCare garden hose stand has a heavy-duty metal design with three anchor points that are easily staked into the ground and do not need concrete. The thing that I like about this hose stand is it disassembles into multiple pieces making it much easier to store in the garage during the winter months.

Here’s what this TomCare free standing hose holder looks like:

  • Material – This garden hose holder is made with heavy-duty metal framing (0.2″ thickness) which helps improve the durability. The black finish gives it a nice, clean look. The overall height is 41.5 inches (counting stakes), but once staked into the ground, the unit stands about 3 feet tall off the ground.
  • Simple Install – One thing I really like about this hose hanger is it has three anchor stakes instead of just two. Many hose stands on the market today just have two anchor points. The third anchor really helps stabilize the unit. This hose holder does not need concrete to install. It can also be disassembled into multiple pieces for easy storage.
  • Storage Capacity – Unfortunately, TomCare does not rate their hose holders for length. Most standard garden hoses are 5/8″ diameter. If you have a 5/8″ diameter hose, a 75-foot hose would be pushing max capacity. You can push beyond that length if you have a smaller diameter hose (like 1/2″ or expandable hoses).

8 Things to Consider When Buying Free Standing Garden Hose Holders

Storage Capacity

When buying a water hose stand for storage, probably the first thing you need to consider is how long of a hose do you need to store? For most city yards, 50 foot water hoses should get the job done (I use 50 foot the most). For larger yards you will want a 100 foot hose, or longer.

For most all hose hangers, storage capacity is based off a 5/8″ diameter garden hose. This is the size of a standard garden hose. For larger diameter hoses, you obviously will not be able to fit as much.

Overloading the top of these hose hangers is not a good idea because the weight can pull the stakes out of the ground. It’s best to plan ahead and make sure you buy a garden hose hanger that has the storage capacity to handle your preferred garden hose.

Assembly

All things considered, assembly is generally not that bad for free standing hose holders. Some units may come completely assembled, while others may ask you to attach a few screws here or there.

Installing these free standing garden hose holders is quite easy (hence the point of free standing). You simply stake them into the ground and don’t have to worry about digging a hole and pouring concrete, and obviously don’t have to worry about mounting the hose hanger to a wall.

If you live in a cold-weather climate, and need to store this garden hose hanger inside during the winter months, it might be best to buy a stand that is easy to disassemble. This is one major reason why I like the TomCare garden hose hanger at the top of the list – it is easy to disassemble and store.

Anchor Points

Many garden hose hangers will have 2 or 3 anchor stakes to push down into the ground, but some options will have more. For example, the Liberty Garden hose holder on our list has five stakes for increased anchoring.

Garden Hose Stand with Faucet

Do you need a garden hose stand with faucet built in? These stands have a water spigot that you can feed an inlet hose to so you can actually use the stand as a water source without any additional plumbing.

These types of stands allow you to conveniently locate a spigot near a garden or other area around the yard that frequently needs water. They are also quite helpful if your house water spigots are buried behind bushes and you want to make the spigot more accessible. Please understand you will need an inlet lead-in hose to run from the water source to this hose stand’s spigot.

Inlet Hose

The inlet hose (also called the “lead-in hose”) is the hose that connects from your spigot to the hose stand if you are using a garden hose stand with faucet built in. Most hose stands do not provide this inlet hose, so you will usually need to purchase this separately.

Obviously, the farther away from the spigot you go, the longer the inlet hose needs to be. Most inlet hoses fall in the 3 to 7 foot range, but there can be exceptions. Be sure to consider how far away your stand needs to be from the water source before purchasing an inlet hose.

Rust Resistance

If you are buying a metal or steel garden hose hanger, you will definitely want to confirm that the reel has been treated to prevent weather damage. Most metal garden hose hangers use a powder-coated finish to protect the metal, but it is always best to double check.

Convenience

Hose reels and hose stands and garden hose pots give you a convenient way to store your garden hose up off the ground. But if you are looking for even more convenience, there are two things you can consider.

First, automatic hose reels make it very simple to store your hose because they are spring loaded and have the ability to automatically retract the hose. Most automatic hose reels come with a hose inside, so you don’t have to worry about setup. If this interests you and you want to read more, visit our article about best automatic hose reels.

Second, you can consider a hose reel cart. Using a cart to store your hose allows you to easily navigate your hose around the yard, spigot to spigot. Most of these heavy duty metal hose carts use never flat tires so you don’t have to worry about tire pressure being an issue. If you hate maneuvering a hose around the yard, these might help.

Height

Height is something that is easy to overlook when buying free standing hose holders, but can be critical for ease-of-use. I have found that most garden hose holders stand about 3 feet off the ground once you stake them down. This is reasonably low to the ground and may be a pain in the back (literally) for those who fight back pain. If you want or need to take stress off your back, buying a unit that sits a bit higher might be best.
